Central Government Pension for Widows and Disabled Persons Increased

The union cabinet has revised certain rules and pension rates for widows, persons with disabilities and grant for BPL families with effect from 1st October 2012.

Widows and persons with disabilities coming Below Poverty Line (BPL) and covered under Indira Gandhi National Widow Pension Scheme (IGNWPS) and Indira Gandhi National Disability Pension Scheme (IGNDPS) respectively would get an enhanced pension of Rs 300, up from Rs 200. In addition they would receive state pension. Eligibility criterion for IGNWPS has been raised from 40-59 years to 40-79 years and for IGNDPS from 18-59 years to 18-79 years.

Lump sum grant to families covered under National Family Benefit Scheme (NFBS) has been doubled from Rs 10,000 to Rs 20,000. Eligibility criterion for the scheme has been lowered from 18-64 years to 18-59 years. This is given on death of the primary breadwinner of the family.
