Unique Identification Authority of India's (UIDAI) Aadhar number is set to get a leg up. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh inaugurated Aadhar enabled services delivery in Rajasthan on Saturday.

The government's Aadhar is a 12 digit number and unique for every Indian resident. It is meant to serve as proof for identity and address for identity based applications like passport, ration card, etc. Enrollment to Aadhar started late in 2010. Presently 21 crore Aadhar numbers have been issued of the 23 crore residents enrolled for it across 51 districts in the country. According to UIDAI the authority responsible for Aadhar, the unique number would do away with duplicate identities plaguing implementation of various government beneficiary schemes.

Aadhar enabled services will be linked to a number of government schemes such as MNREGA wage payments, PDS, distribution of LPG cylinders, social security benefits like old-age payments etc. A number of state governments are ready to roll out the initiative.

Aadhar is expected to find its way to financial services in the country too. Already some banks are permitting it as identity proof. A lot more can be achieved through it once wider population is covered by it.
